Programme Overview

Programme scope of application

The IANZ Drinking Water Testing Laboratory accreditation programme is a specific industry sector scheme established to meet the requirements set by the Water Services Authority - Taumata Arowai, under the Water Services Act 2021.

To demonstrate compliance with the Water Services (Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand) Regulations 2022 and any compliance rules made under the Water Services Act 2021, drinking water suppliers need to monitor the quality of the drinking water they supply by taking water samples and having them analysed.  The Water Services Act 2021 requires analyses to be performed by accredited laboratories. These laboratories, each with a specified list of tests, are recorded in the Water Services Authority - Taumata Arowai Public Register, Hinekōrako. IANZ manages the scopes listed in the public register on behalf of the Water Services Authority - Taumata Arowai.

Laboratories will be listed in Hinekōrako once they have been assessed and demonstrate compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories, and associated specific or supplementary technical criteria i.e. fully IANZ accredited laboratories.

A Fee Schedule can be found under the Forms section of this page.

Scopes of Accreditation

The scope of application of the IANZ Drinking Water Testing Laboratory accreditation programme is restricted to:

1. Laboratories that test drinking water from a drinking water supply for the purpose of compliance testing.

2. Only those tests or determinants which are detailed in the Water Services (Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand) Regulations 2022.

Tests of water for any other purpose are outside the scope of this programme. Accreditation for such tests can be sought under the IANZ Chemical Testing and/or Biological Testing Programmes.
